ILKESTON TOWN FIXTURES 2002-03

3rd July 2002

 

At last the fixtures are out and Ilkeston entertain Bath City on the 17th August at home and are then with two away ties at Stafford Rangers (special for Kiely and Dundas) on the 20th August and Newport County on the 24th. Old rivals Grantham Town arrive at the New Manor ground on the 26th August.

GREEN GROW THE GRASSES HO!

15th June 2002

 

As the nation suddenly starts to realise that Engerland FC could actually win the World Cup those students of the beautiful game who take a break at half time to view the hallowed turf cannot have helped but notice that the miracle grow used on the New Manor Ground pitch is starting get rather long. I am reassured by a friend of the groundsman that there is nothing to worry about because at this time of the year the grass roots will grow down the same distance the grass grows upwards.

On the playing front it looks as though Barry Woolley may be staying at Gresley Rovers. He is under contract at the Moat Ground and the South Derbyshire side have rejected Ilkeston's cash bid.

Chris Curry Catering Manager at the New Manor Ground Has asked the WhiteBallProject to remind fans that the Clubhouse will be open at 7.00am for England's clash with Brasil or Belgium. It is well worth a visit as the atmosphere is brilliant and the beer sauasage and chips are still first class.

RESEEDING A GROWTH INDUSTRY

10th June 2002

 

At half time during England's glorious defeat of Argentina fans got a chance to marvel at how much the NMG grass had grown since the drab draw against Sweden. It also gave ground watchers a sneak preview of the new dug outs in the Co op stand.

If fans had too much to drink during the game the sober verdant baise had some wise words.

ILKESTON TOWN CLUBHOUSE GOES BANANAS

7th June 2002

 

Ilkeston Town clubhouse on a hot and sweaty June afternoon witnessed one of this country's finest moments when Sven Goran Erikkson's England wiped away the heartache caused by the Argentinians four years ago. David Beckham's penalty set up a nail biting second half climaxed by a massive release of tension and joy. The Lager flowed freely and the chip cobs were excellent. What a day!! Bring on the Nigerians.

The team will be visiting a training camp in Blackpool which will tie in with a number of the games. The Robins will meet up with ex player Paul Cox at Leek Town. Cox is assistant to former Hucknall boss John Ramshaw who has promised the Leek faithful that he only played the long ball game at Hucknall because the pitch was so poor. Leek's new boss has also said that he is looking to sign some Derbyshire based players. I suspect that there may be a number of ex Robins looking to see where Leek actually is.

Notts County are expected to send their first team but Derby county will probably send a young side. The two games against Hucknall town and Alfreton will see The Robins pitted against two sides who finished last season on a high and should give a good indication of how strong John McGinlay's new look Ilkeston Town are.

 

 

McGINLAY SIGNS PAUL KIELY AND SCOTT DUNDAS

Ilkeston Town Football Club have just signed Paul Kiely and Scott Dundas from Stafford Rangers. Kiely was winner of the Dr Martens League Premier Division Golden Boot after finishing the season as the Leagues top scorer. Scott Dundas was Stafford's Supporters Player of the Year in 2000-2001 and once scored 53 goals in a season for Kidsgrove Athletic in the North West Counties League. Paul has also played for Kidsgrove and like Scott was playing for Leek Town prior to joining Stafford Rangers. 

John McGinlay has shown how determined he is to bring success to Ilkeston with these two exciting signings. John has also added to his squad local born youngster Tom Williams who has signed from Ripley Town.

PAUL KIELY
Paul joined the club at the end of March 2000 from Leek Town where he was leading goalscorer. In just seven appearances he scored five vital goals in Rangers's 1999/2000 Championship run-in. He was both voted Supporters and Players Player of the Season in 2001/02 and also won the Dr Martens League Golden Boot as leading scorer.

SCOTT DUNDAS
Scott joined Rangers in December 1999 from Leek Town. He began his career with Norton United and then played for Kidsgrove Athletic where he enjoyed a memorable 1997/78 season as they reached the FA Vase Semi-final and won the North West Counties League. Scott was the League's leading scorer that season with 53 goals. Scott finished as Rangers' leading scorer in 2000/01 and voted Supporters Player of the Season.


AS ECCENTRIC AS EUROVISION BUT 133 POINTS FOR ILSON

Ilkeston Town Football Club has been voted as having the eleventh best programme in Dr Martens League Premier Division by the Wirral Programme Club. A complicated and odd points system left Ilkeston with 133 points. Nationally the Robins finished equal 146th and in the Dr Martens League as a whole we came 26th. The best programme was produced by Redhill of the Sussex County League and the best in the Dr Martens League was Eastbourne Borough effort. In the Premier Division Bath City were deemed to have the best programme. Locally Arnold Town won the Northern Counties East survey and Glapwell finished second.

Tea, coffee and hot food (bacon and sausage cobs) will also be available.

KIRKWOOD JOINS BURTON ALBION

As expected Supporters Player of the Year Glenn Kirkwood has chosen to leave Ilkeston Town and join Burton Albion. Glenn like Chris Timons and Garry Middleton was offered a new contracts but the former Eastwood Town and Doncaster Rovers forward has chosen to try for a second time to make his mark in the Conference. Glenn struggled in his first season at Ilkeston and looked to not up the rigours of Dr Martens League football but this season once he was clear of injury he started to score regularly. He ended the season as top scorer averaging a goal every other game although his form in the last four or five dipped alarmingly. Glenn is an honest hard working player but I find it difficult to imagine that he has the class required to replace Christian Moore and Dale Anderson at Eton Park. Like Glenn Kirkwood Chris Timons and Garry Middleton were also offered new style contacts by the club and like Glenn it looks as though they may have decided to reject them. Rumours suggest that Chris Timons has joined Stalybridge Celtic and Garry Middleton may join Stocksbridge Parks Steels. The new contacts are believed to consist of a lower basic pay but includes bonus payments linked to appearances. Chris Timons had a poor start to the season and eventually lost his place. He came back into the reckoning after Mat McKenzie was injured and looked to be getting back to his best towards the end of the season. Garry Middleton also initially struggled to gain a regular place but showed his usual dogged determination and relaibilty towards the end of the campaign. He has made over 250 appearances  in the six season he has been at the club and was one of Keith Alexander's best ever signings. Although many will be worried to see popular players leave the club it must be remembered that the Robins struggled defensively for much of the season and we conceded more goals than we scored in the league.

Also appearing to be on the way out are Nick Kennerdale and Lenny Curtis. Fringe players Lennon Abbott and Ben Sissons have been released joining Paul Challinor and Chris Bettney on the unwanted list.

Those players who are still under contract include John Knapper, Emeka Nwadike, Mat McKenzie, Carl Wright, David Holmes and Ian Robinson. James Whitehead, Ryan Ford, Steve Coates and Jake Fairbrother have all signed for next season but the fates off Stuart Ford, Andy Love, Anton Foster and Paul Bagshaw are still to be confirmed.

One player said to be joining the Robins is highly rated Gresley defender Barry Woolley.

 

WhiteBallProject has had a break of a couple of weeks to recharge the batteries and do some of the work I actually get paid to do. With the World Cup almost upon us I will be looking to reflect an Ilson's eye view on preceedings and our sister site the RedBallProject may even make an appearance in honour of Derbyshire County Cricket excellent start to the new season.
