Debuts Dawson and Myers

Manager Phil Stant decided to give youth a chance as Ilkeston travelled to Spalding United for their first ever game in the UniBond League Cup. Luke Dawson and Cyle Myers were given their debuts and Dan Robinson, Marc Laws, Richard Brewer and Paul Riley were bought in to to be given a rare place in the starting line up.

Dan Robinson had to be alert early in the game when Ian Dunn came close. Ilkeston replied with Ricky Brewer heading against the bar from a Mark Clifford free kick. The Robins were on top and eventually took the lead after 41 minutes when Marc Laws reacting quickly to score after a goalmouth scramble.

After the break Spalding came back strongly and equalised after 51 minutes when Lee Sowerby capitalised on a mistake by Dan Robinson misjudged a through ball. Robinson made amends minutes later when pulled off a terrific save from Lee Hudson. Ilkeston were now under severe pressure as Spalding looked for a winner. Ilkeston had other ideas however and seven minutes from full time Ricky Brewer capped an excellent display by scoring from eighteen yards after another goalmouth scramble. The Robins cruised  through the remaining minutes to secure their place in the next round of UniBond League Cup.

WhiteBallProject Man of the Match - Richard Brewer An excellent and the winning goal from a 17 year old with great potential even if he wasn't hold enough to drink the Supporter's Man of the Match prize.

Post Mortem

Ilkeston Town finaly ended their dissaoppointing run of results in cup competitions albeit in the league cup. Phil Stant decided to give some of the fringe players a game and of those Ricky Brewer will enhanced hios reputation most. Mark Clifford had another excellent game in midfield and continues to settle in well since he has returned to the club. Obviously his stint as a TV celebrity has not affected his game. On Saturday Ilkeston travel to Woodley Sports. Woodley have beaten us once and gave us a good run for our monaey in the opening game of the season. They have some very capable players particularly up front and their winger Hackney will again have to be watched very closely. Manager Phil Stant will have some interesting selection posers. Will Richard Brewer return to the reserves? Will Mark Clifford return to the centre of midfield to cover for the injured Liam Walshe? Will Marc Laws be involved? Who from Justin Jenkins, Chris Freestone, Stuart Copnell and Nigel Jemson will form the striking partnership up front? Will he play two up front? Only Phil Stant has the answers and we will not know them till Saturday but it will not stop us guessing and giving advice.
