Warrington Town started the game well and took the lead after 15 minutes when Michael Heverin chased a good ball played through the Ilkeston rearguard and capitalise on hesitation in the Robins defence to sneak in and tuck the ball home.
The Wires then seemed to adopt a very defensive approach with five at the back and deep lying midfielders. Therefore Ilkeston had the bulk of the possession and ten minutes after going behind they were level when Mick Goddard expertly controlled a Paul Smith cross and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Warrington continued to sit back and Ilkeston almost took the lead on 36 minutes when Goddard fed Nigel Jemson who shot just wide. As the game approached half time Ilkeston put the home side under increased pressure with both Smith and Jemson failing to get in a good shot when well placed and on 44 minutes Goddard had a good run halted and from the free kick Jemson put his effort narrowly wide.
After the break Ilkeston continued to push forward but were finding it difficult to break down a resolute Warrington defence. However after 62 minutes Goddard got clear, ran into the box and shot for goal. Colin Flood got his hands to the ball but the power of the shot carried it into the goal to give Ilkeston the lead.
The home side started to become more adventurous and started to create a few chances of their own. After 67 minute defender Lee Webster came up for a corner and hit a tremendous volley from the edge of the box which was deflected over by an Ilkeston defender. and then Phil Mitchell shot wide with a drive from the edge of the box. The more positive approach left the Wires a bit stretched at the back and David Jervis missed a chance from an acute angle and Jemson got clear but shot too early and placed his effort wide.
WhiteBallProject Man of the Match - Mick Goddard – Scored both goals and a constant creative threat to Warrington.
Mick Goddard showed why he is so highly rated withan excellent peformance and although not getting on the score sheet Nigel Jemsom (pictured left) produced another impressive performance himself. Stuart Copnell got ten minutes action himself and will be wondering how he can get a starting place with Goddard and Jemson playing so well. Copnell however is a fine prospect and his chance will come eventually.
Next Saturday Ilkeston town travel to Whitby for a UniBond League Cup tie. This will be another nostalgic appointment for the WhiteBallProject as Mr Project has spent many holidays in Whitby as well as living in Warrington for three years on Lovely Lane next to the hospital. Hopefully next week will be successful and add to those happy memories.
