Ilkeston Town travelled to the New Buckshead Stadium looking to close the gap on league leaders North Ferriby United and to stop AFC Telford doing the double over them. Telford added drama to the occasion by inviting 1200 children and their parents to the game ensuring that the impressive crowd of 3742 broke the record for a non league game at this level. The Robins had to start the game without the suspended Liam Walshe and Mick Goddard. Craig Swinscoe was recalled to the midfield and Stuart Copnell partnered Nigel Jemson up front.

Ilkeston Town started well and seemed to be enjoying the occasion. Stuart Copnell in particular looked lively early on and created a number of problems for the Telford defence. The home side made their first impression after almost twenty minutes when Carter forced a good save from Ross Turner.

Ilkeston came close to opening the scoring when Mark Clifford almost forced Lee Howarth into putting the ball into his own net. Ilkeston were still on top but the home side showed that they could still be a threat when Perry was fouled by Clifford who was booked. Perry took the resulting free kick himself and forced another good save from Turner.

After the interval the Robins continued to look the brighter of the two sides with Copnell forcing a fine save out of Brock and minutes later Darren Knowles was unlucky to see his effort hit a post. The rebound fell to David Jervis (pictured above) who missed a clear cut chance in front of an open goal.

Ilkeston were made to rue their missed chances after 59 minutes when Perry latched on to a long clearance by the Telford keeper Brock and shot first time past Turner from eighteen yards out.

Straight from the re start Clifford had a golden opportunity to equalise but missed after being clear on goal.

Telford however were looking to build on their lead and Perry was denied his second as he shot wide after 79 minutes. The home side has a number of chances to add to their tally but were eventually happy to settle for a 1-0 win.

Post Mortem

Despite losing out on all three points at Telford Ilkeston Town will know that they will play worse this season and win. Telford fans  who have contacted this website were impressed by the way Ilkeston played and they are confident we will get automatic promotion

Luckily the other results went Ilkeston's and lessened the impact of the defeat. It sounds simple but all the Robins have to do is win their games in hand and they will be back on top of the pile. The Robins do have to play a lot of the teams near the foot of the table but often these games are very difficult because these teams are often fighting for survival. Rocester look doomed and Rossendale could be going the same way as they are now five points adrift of Belper and have played three games more. This could help the Robins as many of the lower placed teams may have only pride to play for when they face Ilkeston.

The gate at Telford was truly remarkable and expertly organised by the home sides officials. The 3742 attendance more than doubled the number of people who have watched Ilkeston away this season. Again congratulations to AFC Telford!!

Ilkeston entertain Mossley and will no doubt be looking for three points however most of the fans who visit this website will be looking forward to meeting the legendary MossleySmiffy
