Manager Phil Stant made just one change for the long trip to Kendal bringing Craig Gaunt (pictured left) back to replace Mark Lever. Ilkeston were looking to stop the Lake District side doing the double over them as they beat the Robins 3-1 at home.

Heavy rain made the pitch heavy and Kendal adapted better having the first chance after nine minutes when Foster was foiled by Ross Turner. Ilkeston started to get back into the game with Mark Clifford seeing a shot clear the bar and Alan Davies having his shot saved by Ilkeston born Thornley. The Robins had a good appeal for a penalty turned down when Stuart Copnell was bought down but minutes later they were more successful when Copnell’s cross struck the hand  of McKenna. Nigel Jemson stepped up and slotted home the penalty to give Ilkeston the lead.

Ilkeston were lucky to hang on their lead when they managed to clear after a goalmouth scramble but they were not so fortunate in added time in the first half when Kenny Mayers equalised for the home side prodiing the ball home from close range.

After the break the home side started to control the game and they came close minutes after the restart after good work by Smith.

Ilkeston were still looking for a winner and Jemson came close with a free kick but it was Kendal who got the all important goal after 68 minutes when Foster’s cross was tucked home by Smith. The same player should have extended their lead when he shot wide two minutes later.

Ilkeston were now struggling to stay in the game and despite bringing on Mark Lever and Craig Swinscoe Kendal ran out easy winners.

Post Mortem

This was a disappointing display by Ilkeston Town especially for the fans who made the long trip to the Lake District. Kendal were far too strong on the day and the Robins never really looked like scoring in the second half. Ironically Ilkeston looked a very tired side towards the end. Granted Kendal are the in form team at the moment but if Ilkeston are to get automatic promotion this season they will need to get something from games like this.

Fortunately for the Robins the other results went Ilkeston’s way with Spalding United gaining a splendid away victory at leaders North Ferriby.

Ilkeston have a tough game against Eastwood Town on Wednesday night and will be looking to take advantage of their games in hand in what is going to be a very busy schedule.
