Despite
the teams contrasting league positions the game started evenly with both
sides creating little in the way of clear cut chances. Ilkeston’s best
chance came when Warrington appeared to have won a free kick twenty five
yards from their own goal. Mr Lomas the referee however surprised every
one by giving the free kick to Ilkeston Town. Mark Clifford was
played through from the quickly taken kick and found himself bearing down.
He looked certain to put the Robins one up but somehow managed to put the
ball wide. At
half time Ilkeston swapped Chris Dolby for David Holmes and
Ilkeston started to look livelier. On 52 minutes Clifford had a
chance but shot well wide and four minutes later Nigel Jemson
disappointingly headed over a Dolby free kick. Warrington
were still capable of threatening and on 61 minutes Ross Turner was
forced to make an excellent save after the visitors hit Ilkeston on the
break and two minutes later Turner again came to the Robins rescue
when he saved well from Simon Burton. Mick Goddard did well on 78 minutes to break through on goal but he was foiled by an excellent last ditch tackle. Ryan Hindley then had the best chance of the half for the Robins when he did well to get on the end of a Dolby cross but could only blast the ball over the bar. Gareth
Holmes came on for the tiring John Knapper but Ilkeston could
not get the elusive breakthrough they needed to breach the resolute
Warrington defence and it was Turner in the Robins goal who was
called on yet again to save Ilkeston from defeat four minutes from time.

The
reasons behind Ilkeston’s lack of form will be debated over and over
again but at the moment everyone needs to pull together so that as
much as possible can be gleaned from the remaining games of the
season. It has been clear in the last two games that the pressure is
building on the squad and tempers are getting frayed. In the end
Ilkeston will get promoted as a team or stay in this division as a
group of individuals. To help generate this spirit it is important the
fans play their part and help the players regain their confidence.
