Ilkeston
Town were forced to make two changes from the side that secured
their win of the season with the defeat of AFC Telford United on
Tuesday. Man of the Match Gareth
Holmes and Scott Bonsall were both injured and were replaced by Ryan
Hindley and Mark Clifford. On the bench David
Jervis made his first appearance of the season.
Coalville
Town were hoping to emulate the excellent run they had last season
when they reached the First Round Proper and within 25 seconds they
came close to taking when Martin Fox hit the bar with a stunning 25
yd drive. Despite this early promise the game descended into a dour
midfield duel with the visitors generally having he better of the
play.
Manager
Phil Stant attempted to change things when after 30 minutes
he replaced Hindley with Ryan Ludlam. Within minutes
of his introduction Ludlam should have put Ilkeston ahead. Justin
Jenkins and Mick Goddard both had chances to put the ball
into the net before it fell to Ludlam who put his effort into
the side netting. It was to be the Robins only goal bound effort of
the half but as the half closed Coalville took control of the game.
Jason Weafer had a good chance but shot straight at Ben Scott
after 35 minutes and 8 minutes later the Ilkeston keeper made an
excellent save from a Stuart Wilson header. Just before the break
Rich Walker came close but saw his effort hit the side netting.
The
Robins were sent out for the second half much earlier than their
opponents and it almost seemed to the trick when Jenkins
latched on to a long through ball only to shoot weakly at the
keeper. Nigel Jemson was bought on for Gary Townsend
but it was Scott who was
still the busier keeper. However against the run of play the Robins
took the lead on 57 minutes when Ludlam's excellent free kick
was headed home by Craig Swinscoe.
Coalville
racted by forcing Scott into another making series of
excellent saves as the ex Hereford keeper kept Ilkeston in the game.
It was only after 75 minutes before Ilkeston put any pressure on the
visitors goal when Jemson forced an excellent save out of
Sean Bowles. Ten minutes later clever work by Jemson led to Jenkins
setting up Goddard in front but the out of touch striker
ballooned the ball over the bar. Coalville still would not give up
and deep into added time keeper Bowles came up for a corner but
screwed his shot wide.

Man of the Match -
Ben Scott
- Kept Ilkeston in the game with a string of excellent saves.
Ilkeston
town will be relieved to be in the draw for the next round of the FA
Cup on Monday. Coalville looked the better side for much of the game
and it was difficult to recognise an Ilkeston side that overran
Telford for the first 45 minutes on Tuesday night. In fact it was
not the same side and this probably explains why the Robins were so
lacklustre in the first half. The energy and dynamism of Gareth
Holmes and Scott Bonsall was sadly missing and in the end
the Robins had Ben Scott to thank for still being in the FA
Cup.
On
Wednesday Ilkeston travel to North Ferriby to renew their rivalry
with the Unibond Division One champions. North Ferriby have started
well and are top of the table so it will be a tough game for
Ilkeston. However if the team can summon up a passionate performance
like that against Telford they may get something from the game. Also
Bonsall and Holmes might be back in business.
