Ilkeston
Town started their first without Phil Stant at the helm
against the in form Wakefield & Emley. Nigel Jemson and Justin
Jenkins made a return to the starting line up with Ryan
Ludlam and Gary Townsend dropping to the bench.
It
was the visitors who had the first chance on goal when Muller
was fouled on the edge of the box but Thompson's free kick sailed
over. Jemson had a chance on nine minutes when he just failed
to get on the end of a Jenkins cross and a minute later Chris
Adam shot across the face of the goal.
The
Robins bright start was rewarded on 13 minutes when Colin Hoyle
headed the ball into the box to find Mick Goddard unmarked. Goddard
slotted the ball home with aplomb to net his first goal since March.
Ben
Scott then was forced to make a series of terrific saves to
maintain Ilkeston's lead. He first saved well from Wright and then
made two excellent saves from Kenworthy. The visitors were also
unlucky on 29 minutes when Muller crashed a shot against the
woodwork.
Just
one minute after the interval Goddard doubled the Robins lead
with his second goal. Adam had a shot blocked and Goddard got
on to the rebound to crash the ball home.
As
the game wore on Wakefield looked less threatening despite the fact
that Chattoe and Satniforth both had good chances. In fact Ilkeston
could have gone further ahead when Adam hit a shot against
the bar from the edge of the box after good work by Jemson.
WhiteBallProject
Man of the Match – Ben
Scott – A series of excellent saves kept Ilkeston in the game when they led
by a single goal.
After
all the intrigue and off the pitch excitement had died down Ilkeston
went out and won a game they had to win to gain the confidence of
the fans. Wakefield & Emley are a good side but the Robins
showed what they can do when they have the right motivation. For
whatever reason they could not produce the same winning mentality
often enough this season for Phil Stant and it is obvious
from Phil's comment since that not everyone in the camp was
pulling in the same direction. Whoever takes over will inherit the
same problems Phil and Ernie had worked hard to solve
this season. The first of the difficult decisions has been made at
the club honourably by Phil Stant but I am sure that despite tonight's
win there will be a few more to be made before the Robins can move
forward together.
