Caretaker
managers Craig Gaunt and Nigel Jemson decided to stick
with the team that beat Wakefield & Emley in midweek with the
only change to the squad being the introduction of Mark Clifford
on the bench fresh from his suspension.
Both
sides started brightly with the home side having the first chance of
the game when Denham shot over the bar in the first minute. Chris
Adam was on target for Ilkeston shortly afterwards but his shot
was well saved by Connor.
The
Robins took the lead after 17 minutes when Mick Goddard was fouled
in the box after an impressive run and stepped to take the spot kick
himself coolly dispatching the ball past Connor. After 22 minutes John
Burns picked up what looked like an hamstring injury and was
replaced by Clifford. Amazingly Clifford was booked
within seconds of entering the fray when he clattered an Ashton
player.
Ilkeston
went two up after 27 minutes when Goddard got on the end of
an excellent Adam corner to prod the ball home from close
range.
On
35 minutes Ilkeston thought they should have had a penalty when
Goddard fed Adam who was bundled off the ball. In the melee the ball
fell to Gareth Holmes whose was blocked by Connor.
The
Robins were totally in charge at this point but had their confidence
dented on 43 minutes when Ashton pulled a goal back through
Kilheeney. Craig Swinscoe was harshly judged to have fouled
an Ashton forward and from the resulting free kick Ben Scott
made a good save but the ball fell to Kilheeney who made no mistake
from close range.
After
the break Ashton became more positive as Ilkeston started to tire
and it was no surprise when on 72 minutes the home side equalised.
Scott Green ran at the Robins defence which backed off and from 15
yards out Green deftly swept the ball past Scott.
The
game started to drift towards a conclusion but livened up in injury
time. On 90 minutes Goddard thought he had scored with an excellent
volley into the top corner only for the linesman to spot an earlier Jemson
off side. Seconds later Ashton broke clear and Denham's shot was
well saved by Scott.

Man of the Match – Mick
Goddard –
Two
goals and a great all round performance. Just a pity he did not get
his hat trick.
A
game of two halves with Ilkeston dominant in the first half and
taking a two goal lead through the revitalised Goddard only
to see Ashton fight back to get a share of the spoils with an
impressive second half display.
Ilkeston
tired in the second half and looked like a team with a few too many
old legs on display but they held on for a point. In fact their
first point away from home this season. It must be remembered
however that Ashton are one of the weakest sides the Robins have
played this season. Apart from Goddard Holmes played well and
Clifford looked solid after his early brush with notebook.
Despite
the disappointment of letting a two goal lead Ilkeston must be glad
they have broken the run of depressing away defeats they have suffered
since the start of the season.
