Ilkeston Town caretakers managers Nigel Jemson
and Craig Gaunt decided to blood a number of reserve team
players as they entertained Blackwell Miners Welfare in the
Derbyshire Senior Cup. Blackwell arrived at the New Manor Ground
with a long injury list and smarting from two successive 6-0 defeats
at Heanor Town and Barton Old Boys.
However the visitors easily held their own in the
initial exchanges and on 9 minutes they had the best chance so far
when Mark Deakin headed weakly wide after getting clear of the
Ilkeston defence. The Robins should have scored themselves a minute
later but John Currall missed a good chance after being set
up by Chris Adam.
Ilkeston now started to dominate proceedings but on 26
minutes Ross Turner was forced to make a good save from
Deakin. Almost immediately after wards Paul Smith missed a
glorious chances from three yards after Townsend had flicked
on a Michael Pashley long throw. Then Adam put the
ball over the bar after a good cross
by Smith.
Eventually the Robins got the breakthrough they were
looking for when after 36 minutes the impressive Adam again
broke down the left and crossed for Currall to force the ball
home from close range. Three minutes later however Blackwell struck
back when Brett Shade was played through and he coolly slotted the ball past Turner.
After the half time break Ilkeston attacked the
Blackwell goal with renewed vigour. Smith provided an
excellent cross which Townsend and Curral both managed
to miss. On 50 minutes Ilkeston regained their lead when another Pashley
long throw caused confusion in the visitors defence and the ball
fell to Adam who thundered his shot past Hatton from ten
yards out. A minute later the Robins went three up when Townsend
got on the end of a Currall pass and expertly hammered his
shot into the top corner from just inside the area.
Ilkeston were now totally in control and Pashley
shot over after good work by Gareth Holmes after 57
minutes. The Robins had to wait till the seventy first minute before
they got their fourth goal. Richard Brewer went on a surging
run evading a number of clumsy challenges before feeding Adam
who slotted the ball home with aplomb.
Ilkeston completed the scoring on 76 minutes when
substitute Justin Jenkins scored despite appearing to be
yards off side after Pashley took a quick free kick. The
Robins had a number of chances to hit six most notably when Holmes
ran the length of field but decided to take the ball around Hatton
but the ex Robin did well and took the ball off the foot of Holmes.
WhiteBallProject Man
of the Match – Gareth Holmes – Controlled he game
from midfield just pipped the impressive Adam.
A nervous start in the first half was followed by an
impressive second half in which Ilkeston totally dominated. The
possibly of an upset was always present despite the poor form of
Blackwell because of the number of inexperienced players in the
Robins line up. In the end once the outcome of the game was beyond
doubt Ilkeston played some impressive football. Holmes was
again outstanding but Adam was a constant worry for Blackwell
on the left and t times they resorted to some very heavy tactics to
stop him. the younger players Pashley, Currall, Brewer and Mathers
all had good second halves.
What
was encouraging was the fact that Ilkeston Town tried to stick to
the passing game that proved so fruitful against Radcliffe Borough
and if we play the same against Gresley Rovers on Saturday the men
from will think thy are watching Brazil circa 1970.
