For
their first FA Trophy tie of the season Ilkeston Town made the short
journey to Gresley Rovers with a much changed side from the one that
beat Blackwell Miners Welfare in midweek. Gresley included ex Robins
Alan Davies, Pat Lyons, Aaron O'Connor, Tony Hemmings, David
Holmes and Gavin Saxby in their squad.
It
was Gresley who made the brighter start and within eight minutes Mark
Clifford was lucky to escape a caution after a heavy challenge
on Tony Hemmings. From the resulting free kick Gresley took the lead
when Jamie Barrett got on the end of a Gary White set piece to score
with a looping header. Matters got worse for Ilkeston when in form
keeper Ben Scott collided with a defender and was knocked
unconscious. After lengthy treatment he was replaced by Ross
Turner. Gresley were now well in control and should have gone
further ahead when Darren Knowles cleared a Matt Millns
effort off the line.
Within
minutes the inevitable happened and Clifford got booked after
another strong challenge on Hemmings. Despite being under constant
pressure Ilkeston equalised just before half time when John Burns
scored with a header from a Nigel Jemson cross.
After
the break Ilkeston started to look more positive and Mick Goddard
spurned a good chance when he directed a header straight at
Pemberton. On 52 minutes Clifford made up for his earlier
misdemeanors when he scored with a fine 25 yard strike after being
fed by David Jervis.
Both
sides now made substitutions but the game looked sealed when
Gresley danger man Aaron O'Connor limped off and the home side were
reduced to ten men. Ilkeston however managed to throw their lead
away when in the dying seconds they failed to keep possession and David
Holmes broke clear and crossed for Carl Slater to equalise.
WhiteBallProject Man
of the Match – Gareth Holmes – Another excellent
performance.
A
classic game of two halves. Ilkeston outclassed in the first half
and deservedly down through an early goal. However a beak just
before the break lead to a surge in confidence and the Robins were
back in the game. But just as it looked like Gresley were giving up
on a game they should have had sealed in the first half the Robins
managed to commit suicide and gift Gresley a late equaliser.
Ilkeston however will get another chance to put it right in the
replay and you never know Aaron might be a spectator which will made
the job a tad easier.
