Ilkeston
Town Manager Nigel Jemson relegated himself to the bench for
the visit to AFC Telford United. Mick Goddard and Justin
Jenkins were given a chance to shine up front whilst Gareth
Holmes found himself accompanying his manager on the bench with Paul
Smith starting on the right.
In
front of 1629 fans
Telford
got the better of the early exchanges and Ross Turner did
well to clear Tomkinson’s effort after only two minutes. Ilkeston
replied with Smith testing Brock with a teasing cross and Goddard
putting in a fine shot on the run.
Turner
was having problems with the swirling wing and when he misjudged
a free kick Reynolds headed just over the bar. On 30 minutes another
goalmouth scramble ended up with Beale hitting the Robin’s post.
Telford
had much the better of the first half but
Ilkeston started to come back into the game in the second and on 54
minutes a fine low cross from substitute Chris Adam was hit
over the bar by Smith. On 78 minutes the Robins should have sealed
all three points when John Burns was clear on goal. He looked
certain to score but Brock pulled of a great save has Burns
tried to slot the ball past him.
The
draw proved to be a fair result and neither looked like breaking the
deadlock in the remaining minutes.

Man of the Match
– David Jervis - A
solid performance and just pipped Ross Turner and Mick
Goddard
In
the end this must be viewed as a point won rather than two points
lost. Although
Telford
are struggling this season the Buckshead with 1629 fans in it is not
an easy place to go and get a result. Manager Nigel Jemson made
the difficult decision to drop himself so he could see what Goddard
and Jenkins could do up front. Many fans however were
surprised that the influential Gareth Holmes was relegated to
the bench as he has been a star performer on numerous occasions in
the last four or five weeks.
On
Saturday the Robins face another away trip this time to Frickley
Athletic. Ilkeston will be looking to get three points from this
game so that they can improve on their poor away record this season.
The attendances at the grandly named Millennium Enterprise Stadium
are not bad but are still 1300 below what the Robins played in front
of on Tuesday.
