Ilkeston
Town Manager Nigel Jemson welcomed back Colin Hoyle after
injury as the Robins looked for their first away win of the season
at high
flying
Frickley Athletic.
Ilkeston
started brightly with Mick Goddard and Justin Jenkins
causing problems for the home sides defence. Craig Swinscoe
then came close with a header. After 32 minutes the Robins thought
they should have had a penalty when Goddard was clean through
and looked to have been bought down by ex Belper man Kennedy.
Goddard and Kennedy then became embroiled in a series of
unseemly exchanges resulting in both players being booked when perhaps
referee Chris Reeve could could have dismissed both players.
As
the half wore on Frickley came back into the game and top scorer and
ex Robin Callery forced an excellent from Ross Turner just
before half time.
After
the break both sides seemed to be having greater difficulty coping
with the poor surface and blustery wind. David Jervis put in
a fine a cross that the Frickley rearguard scrambled away and then Jenkins
beat Ingham to a Burns through ball but his shot was cleared
off the line by Collins.
Just
as the game was becoming increasingly scrappy with misplaced passes
abounding Frickley broke the deadlock when substitute Woolford
pounced on a loose ball twelve yards out to drill the ball
home.
Collins
then had a good chance to score a second for Frickley but he misplaced
his header. However the home side did not have long to wait for the
their second goal. Turner collected a high cross and looked
to clear the ball upfield but appeared to trip Woolford who had
stood in front of him. The referee gave a penalty which Callery duly
dispatched and booked the furious Turner.
The
incident affected Ilkeston badly and towards the end of the game
they started to lose their discipline as Frickley took complete
control of the game. Ilkeston had Jervis and Jemson booked
and to some extent were lucky to finish the game with all eleven
players still on the pitch.

Man of the Match
– John Burns - A
becaon of hope and style in what was a bleak performance
particularly second half.
Ilkeston
showed in the first half that they had the ability to beat Frickley.
Yes the Robins were finding it very difficult to play their passing
game on what was a very bumpy pitch but they had enough first half
chances to have been two up at the break.
In
the second half Ilkeston were driven to venting their frustration in
a series of poorly timed challenges. The referee was unfortunately
very weak and had in the first half been very lenient with a number
of very violent incidents. In the second half at times he lost
control completely. However Ilkeston should have been professional
enough to have continued to play football. But they did not and in
the end they got exactly what they deserved which in this instant
was nothing.
The
management will be looking for a controlled performance when they
take on Gateshead on Saturday if Ilkeston are to get their first
goal and win since Nigel Jemson took over as manager.
