To
address a lengthy injury list and suspensions Nigel Jemson
introduced his first signing since becoming manager. Oliver
Ryan made his debut after signing on loan from Lincoln
City. Gary Townsend also returned up front and Ryan Ludlam
replaced Darren Knowles at full back.
The
Robins started very brightly against a Gateshead side who have the
second worst away record in the league (Ilkeston have the worst). David
Jervis was prominent in the early exchanges and his free kick
was headed just over by Craig Gaunt. Minutes later a Jervis
corner just evaded Craig Swinscoe then Gary Townsend
got on the end of a Ross Turner clearance but shot just wide.
New signing Ryan was making an impression and after ten
minutes his left wing cross found its way to Adam whose shot
cannoned off the Gateshead post.
Ilkeston
were pinning the visitors back in their own half and it was no
surprise when they took the lead on 35 minutes. Jervis
exchanged passes with Adam who burst into the penalty and
hammered his shot into the roof of the net.
As
the game moved towards the interval the robins kept up the pressure
with Townsend, Ryan and Holmes all coming close to increasing
Ilkeston's lead.
After
the break Gateshead started to look more positive and Taylor had a
fine shot which went just over the bar and then Turner was
forced to make a save from the impressive Parker.
The
Robins nerves were calmed when they increased their lead on 56
minutes. Townsend put Ryan clear but his shot was
blocked only for the ball to fall to Adam who coolly slotted
home his second of the game.
Gateshead
responded by attacking more themselves and on 63 minutes they got
back into the game when Taylor eluded the Robins defence and slid
the ball past an hesitant Turner.
Despite
this set back Ilkeston sealed the game nine minutes later when Paul
Smith's cross was helped into the net by a back peddling Winter
in the Gateshead goal.
Matt
Turner came on for the later stages and looked very lively and
with a bit of luck could have had two goals. One was well saved and
the other was flagged for off side.

Man of the Match
– Chris Adam - A
constant threat to Gateshead and two exceptionally well taken goals.
After
a poor second last week at Frickley Ilkeston needed to bounce back
and they did this with some style. The change in personnel forced on
Nigel Jemson by injuries and suspensions paid dividends
as Ilkeston put in their best performance of the season.
Overall
the side looked much more mobile with debutant Ryan showing
quick feet and a subtlety of touch up front. Jervis and Ludlam
had excellent games at full back and the midfield were well served
by Gareth Homes and John Burns. The biggest applause
must however go to Chris Adam who must have wondered whether
he was ever going to get a break at the New Manor Ground. Well today
he turned in a match winning performance and he must now be looking
to cement a regular place in the robins line up. On
Tuesday Ilkeston travel to Radcliffe Borough looking to end their
dismal run of away form and after today's performance there is no
reason why they cannot register their first away win of the season.
