For
the third game running Nigel Jemson stuck with the same line
up as the Robins entertained table toppers North Ferriby United.
Ilkeston
started brightly in the crystal clear winter sunshine and after only
two minute Gary Townsend engineered a good effort which just
flew past top corner of the visitors goal.
Just one minute later North Ferriby struck back when Fothergill's
Iow shot tipped wide by Ross Turner.
After
twenty minutes Townsend was injured and was replaced by Nigel
Jemson.
Jemson started to
show some skillful touches but the game became scrappy with neither
capable of getting a breakthrough.
However
after 34minutes Ilkeston came close when a Jemson free kick
drifted just past the foot of the post.
The Robins had most of the
play at this point but were unable to create any clear cut chances.
North
Ferriby showed that they still could make an impression when
Lightowler had a shot after a good turn which flew just past post.
Then Holmes shot well
over in added time.
After
the break the Robins got the break they were after when after 47
minutes Chris Adam reacted quickest to Jemson's
flick on to lob the keeper and put Ilkeston in front.
Ilkeston
thought they should have had the chance to have added to their lead
when on 49 minutes Oliver Ryan broke through and appeared to have
been bought down by Sharp in the visitors goal. The Robins vehement claims
for a penalty were waved away by referee Stretton.
Then
Ryan and Adam combined well but Adam's cross was just
cleared.
North Ferriby started to get
back into the game and Morley shot well over after good work by
Wainman. On
59 minutes Turner made an excellent save from Thompson after Adam
had blocked a shot from Wainman. North Ferriby finally got their equaliser
after the Ilkeston defence failed to clear a loose ball and Fothergill
poked the ball home from eight yards out.
Ilkeston
reacted positively and Adam's
looping cross found Jemson whose header was well saved
by Sharp. After a spell when the visitors were on top and in control
the Robins then started to look the likeliest team to get a winner
and after 69 minutes Ryan headed over from a fine David
Jervis cross.
As
the seconds neither side could conjure up a winning goal and in the
end the draw seemed a fair result.

Man of the Match
- Chris Adam - Ilkeston's most potent attacking
especially when he ran at the defence. Also made some telling
defensive blocks.
At
the start of the game Ilkeston Town may have thought of a point
against the league leaders as a good result but it is difficult to
get away from the nagging suspicion that is a game that the Robins
could have and possibly should have won. Perhaps the pivotal moment
came shortly after Ilkeston's opener from Adam. Ryan broke
away and started to round the keeper and for most Ilkeston fans it
looked as though Sharp bought him down. If the decision had gone the
Robins way and they had converted the resulting spot kick North
Ferriby may not have been able to come back into the game. As it was
they didn't and North Ferriby had an excellent spell of pressure
which eventually resulted in their equaliser.
Ilkeston
still need a goalscoring striker and the rumours that Justin
Jenkins is to be farmed out on loan seem a bit odd. However if
it is true that the Robins are interested in bringing back Aaron
O'Connor we at WBP wish them
luck because we did not treat the talented striker too well in his
last spell at the New Manor Ground.
Jemmo's
freekick so so close!!
