Ilkeston
Town
manager
Nigel Jemson had to ring the changes for the Robins first ever
league encounter with Burscough. Sixteen year old Joel Hodgkinson
made his league debut coming in for the injured Paul Smith and
Jemson returned to the starting line to replace the unavailable John
Burns. Colin Hoyle also returned from injury to fill in for the
unwell Craig Gaunt.
Ilkeston
started brightly with both Ryan Ludlam and Hoyle launching deep crosses
into the Burscough box which were dealt with by Tong. Then Gareth
Holmes got onto the end of a Hodgkinson cross after six minutes but
shot wide and minutes later Gary Townsend’s fine effort was tipped
over by Newnes.
Burscough
made their mark after 12 minutes when a last ditch tackle by David
Jervis stopped Eaton opening the scoring and then four minutes later
Gray shop wide after a strong run.
It was now end to end stuff and Newnes had to save well at the feet of
Oliver Ryan to foil the Robins and at the other end Tong was played
in by Crowder but Ross Turner saved well.
The
deadlock was broken after 24 minutes when Byrne latched on to a poor
clearance and his low cross cannoned off Blakeman into the Ilkeston
net to give the home side the lead.
Within
seconds of the restart Townsend saw a fine effort scrambled off the
line by Underwood and just before the break Townsend set up Holmes
but the midfielder blazed over the bar from twelve yards out.
After
the break Ilkeston went two down when Parry crossed from the right
and Eaton scrambled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
The
Robins bounced back in fine style when on 53 minutes Townsend played
in Hodgkinson who calmly slotted the ball past Newnes. Burscough
however almost increased their lead when Holmes cleared a Tong header
off
the line.
The
home side were reduced to ten men after 66 minutes when Crowder was
dismissed after a scuffle involving Gray and Chris Adam. Ilkeston were
not able to take advantage of the numerical supremacy and Burscough
held on to their slender lead.

Man of the Match - Gareth Holmes – Usual workmanlike performance
from the all action man.
Joel
Hodgkinson must surely have written himself into the history
books as Ilkeston Town youngest ever goalscorer. We think he may be
the youngest player ever to play for the Robins at just sixteen. It
is just great to see a local player making his mark for the Robins
as Ilkeston only other resident playing for the Robins is John
Burns and believe me he ceratinly was not born in
Ilson.
Despite
the defeat this was a promising display against a team who are
feared by many and expected to be near the top of the UniBond League
Premier Division at the end of the season.
