Ilkeston
Town manager Nigel Jemson had Paul Smith and John
Burns back from injury and relegated himself and Joel
Hodgkinson to the bench for the visit to Rossett Park home of
Marine.
The
team bus got held up by traffic and poor directions and only arrived
at the ground thirty minutes before kick off. This did not appear to
effect the Robins too greatly because after an early scare when Ross
Turner had to make two fine saves they made a terrific start to
the game. After only ten minutes Gary Townsend put Ilkeston
ahead when he got on the end of a Smith cross to haed in off
the cross bar.
Marine
tried to get back into the game but were well held by a confident
looking Robins outfit. In fact after the interval on 48
minutes Ilkeston went two up with a excellent goal by Smith.
Ryan Ludlam took a free kick which was cleared to
Smith who took one touch then blasted the ball into the net off
the post from twenty five yards out.
A
minute later Marine almost pulled a goal back when substitute Byrne
had a shot which hit the post and rebounded to safety. The home at this
point looked a well beaten side but on 56 minutes another substitute
Latham took a free kick which went clean through the Ilkeston wall
and into the net.
The
turning point in the game came on 62 minutes when Smith had a
shot come cross which looked goalbound only for Murphy to
acrobatically clear off the line. Marine did not look like a team
that could come back from 3-1 down.
Ilkeston
were still comfortably holding on to their slender lead until ten
minutes from time when Byrne found himself in space and he struck
the equaliser. The Robins world fell apart three minutes later when
Parle's hopeful shot was deflected past a stunned Turner.
Further insult was added to injury when in added time Ray was left
unmarked to tap in the fourth.

Man of the Match
- Paul Smith - Made the first goal and scored a stunning
second. An excellent performance.
After
48 minutes Ilkeston Town looked to be coasting to what would been
their first away win of the season. More importantly it was at the
home of one of the title contenders. However the wheels came off the
bus, slowly at first and then with a vengeance in the last ten
minutes.
Manager
Nigel Jemson will now have the job of picking up a team who
have now squandered their third two nil lead on their travels. It
could be said that the visit to Runcorn is a good opportunity to put
it right next week but the Merseyside had an excellent result today
and they will be hoping to put a bit of a run together.
It
may be time to introduce new faces because despite the upheavals
this season Ilkeston have not made a permanent signing yet. One
loanee and a couple from the reserves are the only additions to the
squad. The club say there is money available so lets see if players
out still want to play for Ilkeston Town like they did in the old
days.
The
Robins need a result to boost confidence because although we are
eighteenth in the table all the teams below us have games in hand
and we could find ourselves second from bottom in no time.
