Ilkeston
Town made the short journey up the A6 to neighbours Matlock Town
still looking for their first league away win of the season and attempting
to end a run which has seen them beat the Gladiators only once in
the last 22 years. Ryan Ludlam was added to the team that
beat Bradford park Avenue replacing the injured John Burns.
Ilkeston
started brightly and David Jervis almost gave them the lead
after five minutes when he just failed to get on the end of a fine Mick
Goddard cross. The home side weathered the early Robins pressure
and almost broke the deadlock themselves after 15 minutes when Ben
Scott had to acrobatically tip a lobbed shot from Dean Cropper
over the bar. Three minutes later Goddard saw another cross
trickled across the Matlock six yard box with nobody able to put in
the finishing touch. Then Colin Hoyle broke forward and fed Goddard
and the striker shot was well saved by Richmond.
The
game turned on 29 minutes when Hoyle played a back pass to Scott.
The keeper fluffed his kick and in an attempt to regain his ground
he hauled down Dean Cropper. Fortunately for Scott and the
Robins referee Naylor surprisingly only showed the yellow card.
However Barraclough coolly converted from the spot kick. Two minutes
later later Ilkeston conceded yet another penalty when Hoyle needlessly
pushed Gary Webster in the box. This time Scott guessed right
and saved Barraclough's spot kick.
A
few minutes later with Ilkeston in disarray all hell let loose when
Cropper appeared to kick Scott who had just saved a header. A
mass brawl ensued which spilt over into the goal net. At this point
a female spectator decided to threw a pint of beer over the players
and this led to an unseemly skirmish on the terraces.
When
play eventually got underway again Matlock soon extended their advantage
. Ryan Davis reacted well when the Robins were unable to clear a
corner and his header found the net through a ruck of players.
Referee Naylor capped a very poor performance by only adding a
minute added time despite their being a lengthy brawl.
After
the break Ilkeston again took the game to Matlock without looking
like they were going to score. Gary Townsend came on in place
of Ludlam but Matlock still were defending comfortably.
Ilkeston thought they were back in the game after 66 minutes when
Goddard got in and skipped round the keeper before placing the ball
in the back of the net only to find that the lineman had his flag
up.
Ilkeston
cause was not helped when Goddard took a kick in the face and
had to be helped from the pitch before collapsing on the sidelines.
The
last minutes were played out to a backdrop of jungle drums from the
Matlock faithful. Ilkeston had a number of long range efforts but
they never troubled Richmond in the Gladiators goal and before the
end of the game Matlock could even afford to miss another penalty.
Substitute Steve Taylor put his spot kick wide after Barraclough had
been hauled down by Swinscoe.
WhiteBallProject
Man of the Match - David Jervis-
An excellent first half of wing back play and just pipped Ben
Scott.
Things
looked god for Ilkeston for the first half and then a 15 minute
period of madness effectively cost them the game. Ben Scott does not
make many mistakes but his fluffed clearance cost Ilkeston dearly
and they never recovered.
It
is not pick out any particular area of weakness because it was a
pretty miserable performance all round. However the Robins do not
look like scoring because they are not creating enough clear cut
chances and some of this is down to lack of confidence. many times
when the midfield had the ball there was a complete lack of movement
and therefore the midfield end up hanging on to the ball too long or
resort to aimless punts up field. It would appear that whe things
are going wrong players do not want the all because they are too
afraid to make a mistake.
Nigel
Jemson, Craig Gaunt and Bryan Chambers have the
unenviable task of yet again picking up the players after another
abject away performance. Lincoln United is looking like another must
win game.
