Ilkeston
Town
made the
journey to First Division Goole with two new faces in their squad. Martin
Carruthers signed on loan from Grantham replaced another loan
signing Adam Muller who Wakefield Emley did not want to
become cup tied and Pat Lyons who has signed from Belper Town
and started on the bench.
In
their first trip to Goole for nearly forty years Ilkeston made an
excellent when after just three minutes Colin Hoyle put the
Robins ahead when he headed home a Gareth Holmes
corner. Ilkeston then almost increased their lead when Carruthers
broke through the Goole off side trap but Hill in the Goole goal
was alert enough to stop the debutants shot.
Goole
got back into the game after 25 minutes when Craig Gaunt
conceded a corner and when Ilkeston were unable to clear the ball
Douglas
scored with a fine volley.
Ilkeston’s
reply was almost instant when they retook the lead on 29 minutes. John
Burns won the ball in midfield and fed Holmes whose
crossed found Gary Townsend. His lobbed shot came back off
the bar and Carruthers reacted quickly to score from close
in.
The
Robins then again had a chance to extend their lead when a Burns free
kick found Hoyle but the centre half’s effort was well
saved by Hill. Goole however were not down and equalised for the
second time just before the interval when Chafer put
Douglas
through to score with a well taken goal.
After
the break the home side almost took the lead the lead when Constable
forced a good save out of Ben Scott and then Hill made an
equally fine save to deny Carruthers. On 61 minutes Goole
bought on substitute Bonarius and within 45 seconds he was dismissed
for bringing down Carruthers when he was clean through on
goal. Hill made another excellent save from the resulting Burns free
kick.
A
man down Goole defended courageously but were eventually undone by
substitute Mick Goddard who scored two goals in the last
eight minutes of the game. On 85 minutes he beat the tired Goole
offside trap to score and then three minutes into added time he
added a second for himself and a fourth for the Robins. Goole
thought both goals had a hint of offside about them but Ilkeston
were just happy to record their first away in normal time of the
season.
WhiteBallProject Man
of the Match – Martin
Carruthers – Excellent debut, a constant threat and excellent
movement off the ball capped with a goal.
Despite the fact that this victory does not earn Ilkeston three
points and it was against a First Division it was from home and will
be a massive confidence booster. The thought of Martin Carruthers
and Adam Muller linking up in attack is exciting has it gives
the Robins much more mobility up front.
From
what we read in the press there should be more additions to the
squad in the next week or so as Nigel Jemson tries to shake things
up. Next week we travel to
Leek
Town
and will be looking to get our second away win of the new year and
more importantly our first in the league.
