Ilkeston
Town
went to
Guiseley looking to extend their run of winning matches to five.
Manager Nigel Jemson was able to name new signing Glenn
Kirkwood in his starting line up in place of the injured Mark
Clifford. Lee Soar and John Burns were recalled in
place of Pat Lyons and Darren Knowles who both
appeared in the exciting defeat of Alfreton in the semi final of the
Derbyshire Senior Cup.
Both teams struggled to make openings in the early
stages of the game with first effort on goal coming from Guiseley
when
Jackson
put in a shot which Ben Scott comfortably saved. Jackson and
then Cooke both then forced Scott into making saves as
Guiseley pressed for an opening goal.
Ilkeston first serious attempt on goal came from Martin
Carruthers when he tested
Taylor
but shortly afterwards on 31 minutes the Robins took the lead. New
signing
Kirkwood
got on the end of a deep cross from Burns to send a
looping over
Taylor
and into the goal.
Guiseley response was to equalise within a minute.
Jackson
’s shot from twenty yards went in off the underside as Scott
seem to lose sight of the ball in the bright sunshine.
The teams went in at half time all square but within a
minute of the restart the home side took the lead when Grayston
cross was not cleared by the Ilkeston defence and Lee pounced to
score.
Ilkeston now had to push forward
and Adam Muller had the ball in the net but his effort
was ruled off side. Then Carruthers put a shot wide as both
defences started to dominate proceedings. The Robins though almost
went 3-1 down when Soar’s back pass fell short and Scott
had to be alert to save the day. Soar made amends with
one minute remaining when he took advantage of poor marking in
Guiseley defence to set up
Kirkwood
to score a deserved equaliser.
WhiteBallProject Man
of the Match Glenn Kirkwood - A fantastic return for a
man who can now play defence or midfield and still seems to be able
score goals.
Although
Ilkeston took and then proceeded to lose it. This is still a good
result. Guiseley are a side looking to get promoted and they are no
mugs especially at home.
Kirkwood's
arrival was opportune as Mark Clifford was injured last week
and a battle for places in midfield cannot be a bad thing as it is
an area that the Robins have looked less than convincing in some
recent games.
The
big question for most fans is whether the club will be able to
secure the services of Adam Muller on a permanent basis. It looks
as though it is now up to cash strapped Wakefield Emley for Ilkeston
are waiting to see if the bid they have made matches their
valuation.
