Ilkeston
Town Manager Nigel Jemson had to move fast to sign Nottingham
Forest's U17 Republic International keeper Shane Redmond as emergency
for Ben Scott who was injured in training on Thursday. David
Jervis and Mark Clifford were recalled to the team after
injury and Glenn Kirkwood moved upfront to replace the
departed Adam Muller.
Under
a grey February sky both teams struggled to create openings. Most of
the play was confined to the midfield where some rugged challenges
from both teams were being tolerated by a youthful referee.
Ilkeston
came closest to scoring when Kirkwood headed over the bar and
debutant Redmond had a stark introduction to non league
football when he was clattered by a Whitby forward after collecting
an harmless cross.
Whitby's
major threat was the long throw ins of Barber and the Ilkeston
defence had great difficulty in dealing with them.
After
the interval the dour pattern of play continued until Whitby almost took
the lead after 52 minutes. Another Barber long throw found the head
of Ormerod but his header was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Redmond.
Minutes later he young keeper was then called into action to make a comfortable
save again from Ormerod.
Ryan
Ludlam was by now starting to cause problems down the right and
it was after good work by Martin Carruthers that Ludlam
sent in an excellent cross which managed to evade all the Robins forwards.
After
76 minute Ilkeston should have broke the deadlock when
Jervis made a strong run down the left before feeding Kirkwood
who shot wide.
Redmond
made another good stop after 77 minutes but then almost allowed
Ormerod's bobbling shot to evade his grasp but fortunately it whistled
past the post.
In
the last ten minutes of the game Whitby started to get stronger and
looked the team most likely to score. However it was the Robins who
came closest when John Burns acrobatically shot on the turn
forcing a good save from Campbell in the Whitby goal.
WhiteBallProject Man
of the Match - Ryan Ludlam - A fine game and probably
Ilkeston's greatest attacking threat.
This
was a dour game with very few chances and far too many late
challenges. Both defences were on top and there was not a great deal
of quality football on show. The draw in the end was a fair result
with neither side deserving all three points.
Manager
Jemson will be pleased with the way Redmond settled
after a nervous first half but Ilkeston will need to be picking up
thtee points from games as it still very tight at the bottom.
