of the Match |
Gareth
Holmes - An aggressive all
action display which upset Blyth's rhythm and stopped them playing
their usual brand of football. Gareth actually appeared to
get stronger as the game wore on.
Ilkeston
Town continue to keep up their record of producing excellent results
against teams near the top of the table.
The
Robins started the game without Hoyle whose wife was ill but
the versatile Kirkwood slotted in at the back. Blyth totally
dominated the opening stages of the game and it looked as Ilkeston could be
in for a right drubbing. And this was despite missing a penalty
after ten minutes. The Robins were pinned back in their own half but
as the half wore on Blyth started to lose their sharpness.
Ironically Blyth scored just as the Robins were looking likely to go
in with a clean sheet.
In
the second half Ilkeston were a changed team. firstly they appeared
to have a strong wind behind and then they started to 'mix it' with
Blyth. This more physical approach upset the Blyth players and
management and ultimately cost them the three points. Ilkeston
started to dominate the game and the Blyth fans spent more time in discussion
with our management than supporting their own team. In the end
Ilkeston did equalise but could have had all three points with a bit
more luck in front of goal. Many Blyth supporters appeared more
upset about the energetic antics of manager Nigel Jemson than
the fact they had thrown away two valuable points. Nigel has
his critics but it must accepted that today's his half time tactical
decisions and second half substitutions gained Ilkeston Town a
surprise point in their quest for UniBond Premier Division safety.
It may be a case of accepting that football management is not a
popularity contest but a race to get more points than the opposition
and remember nobody liked Brian Clough when he was at Hartlepool.
