Ilkeston Line up:-
After recording their first win of
the season at Evesham United Manager Charlie Bishop had the
luxury of being able to field an unchanged side wit
Marc Laws and Russell Cooke making their home
debuts. Visitors Shepshed included ex Robin
Carl Lawrence in their line up as a target man. In the few appearances
he made for the Robins he always played at the back. It was Lawrence who made the first
positive impact on the game when he ran at the Ilkeston and fired in a
shot which Andy Love was only able to parry but fortunately
Shepshed were unable to latch on to the rebound. Ilkestons first chance fell to Marc
Laws who was put clear after 13 minutes but he pulled his shot
narrowly wide. Shepshed were looking by far the better side and the
impressive Lawrence had a header well saved by Andy Love. After the half hour mark Ilkeston started to get back into the game with both Chris Freestone and Mark Nangle both coming close. Minutes later Shepshed's Darren Grassby was booked for a very late challenge on Fabian Smith. Then Chris Freestone hit the bar with a superb header from a Craig Swinscoe cross. Freestone was instrumental in getting the Robins the breakthrough they deserved when on 43 minutes when Andy Harland in the visitors goal could only parry his shot and Chris Thompson was on hand to force the ball over the line. On the stroke of half time Freestone was bought by Duncan O'Brien in the penalty area and got to coolly convert the spot kick to give Ilkeston a two goal advantage. After the interval the Robins continued to pour forward and Shepshed defending became increasingly desperate. On 47 minutes Mark Nangle expertly headed home a fine Daniel Hollyoak free kick. The visitors situation was made worse when Darren Grassby needlessly scythed down another Ilkeston player and was duly shown the red card. Freestone came close with a header and then struck a free kick against the bar. Shepshed however could not keep down Freestone for long. On 73 minutes Jason Westwood took a short free kick to Alex Callery who whipped in an excellent cross which was headed home by Freestone to make it 4-0. Freestone completed his hat trick with another excellent header from another excellent cross by the substitute Callery. Shepshed regained some pride when Robert Johnson scored with a fine free kick in the dying minutes to make it 5-1.
WhiteBallProject Man of the Match Chris Freestone Scored three and made one and a constant threat all night. An outstanding performance.
