Ilkeston Line up:-
Ilkeston Town made the short trip to
local rivals hoping to overcome a team managed by ex Robins Dave King
and Glyn Stacey. Victory would secure a place in the draw for the next
round of the FA Cup and give the club access to the invaluable financial
rewards now available in world's oldest competition. The Robins promoted
Ben Simms from the reserves to make his debut covering for Craig
Swinscoe who will be out for some weeks with a broken ankle. Ilkeston started the game looking the
more impressive of the two sides and in the second minute Danny
Holyoak had a header cleared off the line. Long Eaton were under
sever early pressure but kept the Robins at bay despite Mark Nangle
and Chris Freestone both coming close to breaking the deadlock.
The home side gradually got back into the game and Mabon had a good long
range effort just go over the bar and the same player turned cleverly in
the box and was foiled by a tremendous save by Andy Love.
Ilkeston however took the lead when a free kick by the impressive Marc
Laws evaded a crowded six yard box to fall to Chris Thompson
who scored with a header on the far post. Despite dominating possession
Ilkeston had a scare straight after the break when Andy Love and Mark
Lever had to scramble the ball away to safety. Long Eaton to push
forward for an equaliser leaving gaps at the back which substitute Aaron
O'Connor was starting to exploit with his pace. Chris Freestone should
have added a second goal for Ilkeston and Aaron O'Connor and Chris
Thompson collided when a good scoring chance offered itself. Long
Eaton came closest to equalising when a free header was placed tamely
wide with ten minutes remaining. Ilkeston made the game safe in the
dying minutes when Aaron O'Connor overcame a number of defenders
before pulling the ball back for Chris Freestone to fire the ball
home. WhiteBallProject
Man of the Match Marc Laws - Had
an excellent first half where he ran the game. Tired a bit in the second
but still pipped Alex Callery and Mark Lever for the
Sheriff's badge.
